A North Canterbury highway has been closed following a three-vehicle crash.

A police spokeswoman said the highway was closed and traffic management was in place.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one person was moderately injured and was treated at the scene.

A rescue helicopter was sent but was not needed, he said.

A Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman said motorists should expect significant delays on SH7 west of Waipara and north of Loop Rd.

A detour had been set up along Greta Valley Rd shortly after 1.15pm. An update on the status of the road was expected about 5pm.

An NZ Transport Agency spokeswoman said those travelling north between Christchurch and Nelson should instead take SH1.

Just after 2.30pm, a car crashed into a power pole on Grahams Rd at Rubens Pl in Burnside, Christchurch.

Campbell said St John staff took one person to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

The road was initially closed to traffic heading east before being fully closed shortly before 4pm.

The closures were expected to last until 9pm to allow contractors to replace the badly damaged power pole.
