Firefighters respond to a large grass fire on Sunday on Railway Rd, Palmerston North.

Roads are being closed in Palmerston North as firefighters work to contain a grass fire.

The fire on Railway Rd, near the intersection of El Prado Dr, broke out on Sunday afternoon.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the grass fire covered 20 square metres, with two fire engines sent to deal with it.

The fire was quickly under control, with officers dampening it down by 4pm, he said.

“It’s still causing a fair bit of smoke in the area.”

A police spokeswoman said they were called just before 3pm to assist with managing traffic.

The road was closed at the roundabout connecting Airport Dr and Railway Rd.

There was also a lot of smoke in the area, so people should stay away, the spokeswoman said.

A Stuff video journalist at the scene said police were telling people in the area to get in their vehicles and leave.
