Another Ottawa police officer then responded to the stop. The driver said that officer, who appeared more experienced, tried to calm the situation down.

The second cop tried to say Hewitt was a good officer and asked the young men to understand how police were trying to be proactive, the driver said.

In the video, the driver stayed calm throughout.

“I’ve seen a lot of cases where people don’t comply and I completely understand where they’re coming from, but there’s always a way to stop it, to stop someone’s actions,” he said.

“I understand that some people get angry, I completely understand,” the driver said, referencing the case of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes. His death has prompted widespread protests in the United States and abroad and has led to ongoing conversations about systemic racism.
