A person has died in a car crash in Whangārei.

Police were called to a single vehicle crash on Maunu Rd, Whangārei just after 2am on Monday.

The vehicle involved collided with a power pole and the person died at the scene, a statement from police said.

Two other occupants of the car have been taken to hospital with critical injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the crash occurred outside Whangārei Hospital.

A section of Maunu road was closed for several hours between Maungatapere and Whangārei.

“An inner cordon exists at the crash site between Melody Ln and Kirikiri Stream Rd in the Horahora area – so Whangārei Hospital can still be accessed by car from the Whangārei end of Maunu Rd,” the agency said in a social media post.

The road was fully re-opened just before 7am.
