Police called to ‘disorder’ incident in Newmarket, central Auckland

Police are at the scene of an incident outside the Movenpick ice cream store in Newmarket.

Detectives have swooped on a shopping street on Broadway in central Auckland after reports of a “disorder”.

Stuff understands police were called to what appeared to have been a serious altercation between people known to each other, in the busy shopping area of Newmarket shortly after 5pm.

The Movenpick store on Broadway, near Khyber Pass Rd, is cordoned off and an officer could be seen speaking to a young man inside.

A single yellow evidence marker sits on the ground outside Movenpick and members of the Criminal Investigation Branch are at the scene, along with a police photographer.

A worker at Medicines to Midnight which was behind the police tape, said she didn’t know what happened but police had been right in front of the shop.

A number of police cars could be seen outside a group of shops in Newmarket, Auckland.

“I didn’t see anything because I was busy serving customers, but I believe there was some sort of confrontation outside,” she said.

A spokeswoman for St John said police had notified them of the incident but their services were not required.
