Two candidates square off in St-Leonard byelection

Angela Gentile (Ensemble Montréal), left, and Arij-Abrar El Korbi (Projet Montréal) are the two candidates in the St-Léonard-Est byelection.

There’ll be a two-way race to elect the next city councillor for St-Leonard on March 15.

The byelection pits Projet Montréal’s Arij-Abrar El Korbi against Angela Gentile from Ensemble Montréal. The deadline for candidates to apply for the election expired Friday.

El Korbi is a commissioner with the Commission Scolaire de la Pointe-de-l’Île and member of the city’s youth council. Gentile was comptroller and general manager of the Pépinière Piazza Gentile — a garden supply and landscaping store.

“I’m going back into politics to give back to the community that made me the woman I am today,” Gentile said at her campaign launch last month.

El Korbi ran in under the Projet Montréal banner in the 2017 elections and her platform focuses on improving access to public transit and making St-Léonard more inclusive to minorities.

The city council seat for St-Léonard-Est was vacated last year after Ensemble Montréal councillor Patricia Lattanzio was elected to the House of Commons for the Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel district.
