Vélo Québec announced on Friday it has cancelled the Tour de l’Île and other cycling events planned for June.

In a statement, the organization blamed the “climate of uncertainty” surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tour de l’Île was supposed to be part of the Festival Go vélo from May 31 to June 7, along with the Tour la Nuit, the Défi métropolitain and other activities. All of them have been cancelled, along with the Défi Vélo Mag in Montérégie on June 20.

“It’s the first time we’ve had to cancel it” since the first edition in 1985, said Vélo Québec president Suzanne Lareau. “We’ve had to lay off a good part of our team the past two weeks. Everyone who worked on these events was laid off.”

People who had signed up for the events can transfer those registrations to the 2021 edition or have their fees reimbursed. The 2021 festival is set for May 30 to June 6, 2021.

Lareau said she’s looking through every government aid program to find ways to save the jobs of 75 permanent employees at Vélo Québec.
